Ok. After last night it is obvious I need more control over what gear I am in. I was racing in automatic last night, and always struggled to control 1st gear.
QUESTION: Can I setup my wheel to where the car shifts automatically, but I could override the automatic shifts with my pedal shifters when I wanted?
I do not want to have to think about shifting during races, so I will probably stick with automatic, but I would like more control when I am coming in/going out of pits and starting the race....

I know what your talking about with the shifting...
When I first started out this time last year racing I tried it first with the automatic but it really slowed me down.
Shiftly is essential *Spelling* when on the track. Many different things come into play with the shift.
1. Control of the car by you and not the game
2. Getting the maximum power out of the gears to the tires
3. Under Yellow flags you can use 4th gear to save some gas if needed. * I do it all the time *
4. Just like when your in the c*ckpit view while racing the shift gives you the feel for everything around you.
5. Road Tracks I would find it impossible to race with an automatic. Turns turns and more turns.
6. Same goes for the turns you might / could use the shift as a source for braking instead of hitting the brake pedal and get out of control.
It takes just a little while **** TRUST ME **** to get used to shifting and also driving in the c*ckPit View but it will greatly help the control and the gaming.
(((( I know others have thoughts on this too ))))

I agree with everything Brooks has said above. Learn to shift and drive in the c*ckpit view!
Also, turn off all your driving aids when practicing offline! The only one that should be on is the preffered driving line.. and even that one is questionable!
